Kamen Rider Super Sentai

Mixed Reaction from Japanese Families as TV Asahi’s Super Hero Time Changes

TV Asahi recently announced broadcasting time will change in October for Pretty Cure, Super Sentai, and Kamen Rider series that are currently airing.

These programs have been playing on Sunday mornings for years. The program times are being shifted in order to begin airing a news broadcast called Sunday LIVE (tentative name) starring Noriyuki Higashiyama.

Reaction to the time change was mixed.

Due to the change of broadcasting time, voices of joy were heard from parents. Many stated “I don’t have to get up early!” Also praise was heard from younger people, who know how tough it is to get up early:

  • “Big Friends” can be watched with a peace of mind!
  • It won’t be overlooked, so it can be watched properly.
  • Do not force your child to wake up!

Not all parents were pleased. Children who tend to get up early could be entertained by tokusatsu shows. Busy parents could use the time to do housework or relax.

Some parental complains included:

  • Children will wake up early, even on Sunday.
  • Please don’t break established schedules children have had now for a long time. We will miss it when we go out, and once it’s over, it’ll be too late to go out.
  • I can get up later, but I can’t watch on regular occasions. I will have to go out by that time.
  • Don’t children always wake up early? Do you not have time to watch it? If I want to go out with my family, it seems like it’ll be late after we’ve finished watching Kyuranger.

Sirabee‘s editorial department asked television viewers (1,332 men and women total within their 20s and 60s from March 24-26, 2017). 30% answered “I’m recording and watching.” So, only one in three people are watching and listening to the recordings.

Although real-time viewing has decreased, it’s expected that children’s schedules will change. It’s a considerably big decision for TV Asahi. What will be the result?

Beginning in October, the new schedule (in JST) is:
5:50 ~ 8:30 Sunday LIVE (tentative name)
9:00 ~ 9:30 Kamen Rider series (Currently Kamen Rider Ex-Aid )
9:30 ~ 10:00 Super Sentai series (Currently Uchu Sentai Kyuranger )
