Share

Hiroshi Fujioka (藤岡弘) portrayed Takeshi Hongo, the first Kamen Rider. As his acting career progressed, he was also known as Segata Sanshiro, mascot of the Sega Saturn. Sanshiro is a tough martial artist who demanded people play the Sega Saturn console. His character became so popular in Japan that a video game featuring the character was released.

Fujioka once again appeared as Sanshiro at the 2019 SegaFes, which celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Sega Saturn console. The last time fans saw Segata, he was in space after defending Sega’s headquarters. The character finally returned to Earth after 22 years.

The event started out peacefully. The stage talk participants discussed the history of Sanshiro. Fujioka discussed that he had some troubles playing such an intense character. Since he learned martial arts from his father, he decided to put his devotion into playing Sanshiro while remaining a child at heart.

Fujioka discussed some of the experiences he went through recording commercials, such as hitting a wooden Sega Saturn controller so hard that his hand became bloodied.

There were 19 commercials released that featured Sanshiro, from 1997-1998.

At the end of the event, Sanshiro’s theme song played. The event ended with cheers from the audience.
