Hassei Takano Gives Insight On His Indie Tokusatsu Film HE-LOW

The movie HE-LOW was crowdfunded by over 1,000%. Fans were interested in the premise of a tokusatsu comedy. The movie reached around 10 million yen in funding, which was an unusually high amount for such a project in Japan.

Experienced tokusatsu actor Hassei Takano (高野八誠), who starred in Kamen Rider Ryuki and Ultraman Gaia took command in this work. Also appearing was Takaya Aoyagi (青柳尊哉), who appeared in Ultraman Orb and Kamen Rider Drive.

Takano came up with the concept of HE-LOW in February 2016. He stated that as long as he has appeared in tokusatsu, he has wanted to make a movie around the tokusatsu world. He invited his long time friend Takamasa Suga (須賀貴匡), who portrayed Shinji Kido/Kamen Rider Ryuki to a pub to discuss collaborating on the project.

While the project was being discussed, Aoyagi was appearing in Ultraman Orb. He was interested in the script, taking interest in the hero that grew tired of fighting. The three men worked well together, with lots of laughter on set.

HE-LOW contains many parodies of the tokusatsu world. Takano stated that he doesn’t like how the hero always wins against the enemy. Aoyagi stated that it was unique to act in a series with a low budget, where there was more opportunity to have fun.

Other actors appearing in HE-LOW includes:

    • Takeshi Yoshioka (吉岡毅志) of Ultraman Gaia
    • Kenji Ohba (大葉健二) who has appeared in the Super Sentai and Metal Heroes series
    • Daisuke Ban (伴大介) of Kikaider and Denkou Choujin Gridman
    • Takashi Hagino (萩野崇) of Kamen Rider Ryuki
    • Kentaro Shimazu (島津健太郎) who has appeared in the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series

A special screening and talk event for HE-LOW will be held at Naka ZERO Hall on April 28, 2018 at 18:00/19:00.
