Does The Flower Bloom? is based off the shounen-ai manga series by Shoko Hidaka. Amano portrays 37-year-oldd Kazuaki Sakurai, who works at an advertising company. His job takes him to a large house, where he meets 19-year-old Yoichi Mizukawa, played by Watanabe, who is an art student. Mizukawa lives in the large house with his cousins.

Sakurai develops feelings for the student. Mizukawa is only interested in painting at first, but eventually begins to have feelings in Sakurai. As their bond grows, Sakurai announces he is getting transferred.

In an interview with TV Life, Amano spoke about the upcoming film. He stated that this is a movie about people and not shounen-ai. Though Amano is married to Akiko Hinagata, he had to gain insight in playing this new role in a shounen-ai work.
